Snowdonia is proper rocky and dangerous. Love climing it but you must respect it. The lakes are just hills in comparison.

Just been looking up Snowdonia. Only just found out apparently around 10 people die there every year. Had no idea about that.

Eric Shipman and HW Tillman have written some of the best mountaineering books out there. They both had an interesting time in WW2 - one In a resistance movement with communists in Italy, and the other in the foreign service in Asia.
Pair of them lived incredible lives.

I don't think Samir has been climbed that many times since, but that's probably as much to do with the political situation out there as much as anything.

I read that book in the 1970’s. Newby was not an adventurer as such but he used to write a travel column in the Guardian/Observer. Whilst it is true to say that he was not a mountain climber he was a very fit bloke and Mir Samir although very high is probably the easiest to climb of its peer group.
The book was/is a great read.

One of my favourite books is 'A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush'. Its writer, Eric Newby and his friend Hugh decided they would be the first people to scale fearsome Mir Samir in Afghanistan in the 1950s. The fact that neither of them had any climbing experience was not viewed by Eric and Hugh as a significant barrier. They simply went for a weekend in Wales to learn how to use the kit and do a bit of light climbing in Snowdonia, then they set off for the Hindu Kush. It's a great story.

Climbing expert was on bbc breakfast the other day and said some turn up having never used crampons before.
And some put them on the wrong way round.
His advice was that climbers should have to show experience of having climbed something similar but smaller.

I doubt that many attemptees(sic?) just rock up on the day with zero experience tbf.
Fair play to anyone who gives it a go.
I do agree that the Sherpas need a bit more credit though and more probably needs to be done about all the environmental stuff.

Mount Everest has a poop problem, as the Washington Post reported.
This season, porters have carried 28,000 pounds of human waste from Everest base camp to be dumped in pits at Gorak Shep, a frozen lake bed located 17,000 feet above sea level.
